Arabic Testing

Arabic Placement Test

The placement test places students in a course that they can take at the University of Arizona.

The test does not provide credit toward the degree, and the test alone does not satisfy the second language requirement.

There is no fee for the placement test.

Arabic Proficiency Test

The proficiency test satisfies the second language requirement if a student demonstrates adequate proficiency.

The proficiency test does not provide credit toward the degree.

After taking the proficiency test, a letter certifying a student's proficiency level will be sent to the Registrar's Office. It is the responsibility of the student to follow-up to make sure this has been completed .

Arabic Special Examination for Credit

The special examination for credit satisfies the second language requirement if a student demonstrates adequate proficiency.

The special examination for credit does provide credit.

Students can only earn credit for ARB 101, 102, 401, and 402, and can only earn up to 10 units (two courses). Please note that ARB 401 and ARB 402 credit can not count toward the Arabic minor.

For example, if a student tests beyond ARB 402, they will receive credit for ARB 401 and 402 for 10 units of lower-division credit and the second language requirement will be satisfied.

To take the test, students need to complete the following steps in the order listed:

Procedures

  1. Applications for Special Examination for Credit or Special Examination for Grade may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar: reghelp@arizona.edu
  2. The application must be approved by the student's advisor.
  3. The examining instructor and the head of the examining department must determine eligibility and sign the application.
  4. The students must return the application to the Office of the Registrar, and pay the $21-per-unit fee at the Bursar's Office (University Services Bldg104). A special examination cannot be scheduled until the Office of the Registrar is notified by the Bursar's Office that the fee has been paid.
  5. The examination is scheduled by the examining instructor normally during the same semester in which the application is made.
  6. Exam and awarding of credit will be forwarded to the Office of the Registrar by the examining instructor. The grade ("CR" or letter grade) is reported to the Office of the Registrar. The examination, together with your graded examination paper and any appropriate evaluations of oral performance or projects, is then filed with the department for at least one year.
