I am delighted to announce that Dr. Julia Clancy-Smith, Regents Professor, has joined MENAS, or rather re-joined the department as she was formerly a faculty member when it was Near Eastern Studies.
As many of you know, Julia is a world-renown historian of North Africa and the Mediterranean world who is widely recognized for her elegant, innovative, and prize-winning scholarship, her enthusiastic teaching, and her dedicated mentoring of graduate students. Her research has been attracted a long list of distinguished fellowships and prizes, including most recently a Guggenheim Fellowship and her most recent monograph, entitled Mediterraneans: North Africa and Europe in the Age of Migration, 1800-1900, won no less than three awards. This is a wonderful development for MENAS and I hope you will all join me in welcoming Julia to the School.
