Before joining the University of Arizona in 1975 Gamal taught at the American University in Cairo and at UC, Berkeley. He served as the Acting Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, 1981-82. He served as the Graduate Adviser of the Middle East section under the Department of Oriental Studies from, 1985-1990 and the Graduate Adviser of the Department of NES from 1990-2000.

In recognition of his service to students and community, Professor Gamal was awarded The Prestigious Graduate advisor of the Year Award in 1988 and the Honorary Citizen of the City of Tucson by L. Murphy, Mayor of Tucson in 1983. He was a certified Examiner of Arabic by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages from 1986- 1993. From 1994 to present, he is serving as a Certified Examiner for the California Court Interpretation Program.

While on leave from the University of Arizona, Professor Gamal established and chaired the Arabic and Islamic Studies department and directed the Arabic Language Center at Zayed University in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates from 2001 to 2004.

Professor Gamal has been the recipient of 50 research grants, including the US Office of Education, The National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), Fulbright-Hays and the Fulbright Commission. He also has been the recipient of seven teaching awards at AUC and the U of A including the Five Star Faculty Award, The Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, and the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.

In his areas of expertise, he has authored and edited 11 books (two received the Arabic Language Academy International Award in 1996 and 2003), and has published over 35 chapters and articles in refereed journals in the Middle East, Europe and the US.

Professor Gamal has served as President of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA), on its Executive Committee and its Editorial Board for four terms. He has served on many national and international boards, including the Egyptian National Library and Archives, the Department of Arab Manuscripts in Egypt and the Egyptian National Center for Translation. He served as a referee for Universities of Kuwait, King Saud, Qatar and several other academic institutions.
