Kamilia Rahmouni, May 2019 PhD graduate, started her assistant professor position at Virginia Commonwealth University this fall, and has aided in the creation of the new Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies minor.

Per an article written on the VCU website, "The 18-credit minor updates and builds on an existing minor in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, reflects changes in the world, and responds to the needs of students to become effective global citizens."

After working for years to mend U.S.-Afghan relations through shared language, cultural understanding and compassion, UA doctoral student Felisa Hervey had a stroke before finishing her dissertation. She graduates with her Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Literature in May.

Former MENAS MA student Lucia Carminati has accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of the modern Middle East History at Texas Tech University, starting in Fall 2020.  Lucia recently completed her History dissertation, on migrant labor and the growth of Port Said, Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, under the supervision of Professor Julia Clancy-Smith last Spring.  Before that, Lucia completed her MA in MENAS with support from a Fulbright fellowship and...
