Gabriel Sandoval is a PhD student in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies (MENAS) within the School of Global Studies at the University of Arizona. His research interests include North African politics, international relations in the Mediterranean region, specifically between Spain and Morocco, and migration to Europe via North Africa. He also has done work on the Libyan Civil war and the Western Sahara/ Southern Morocco dispute. Currently, he is researching the effects of AI use in political science classrooms and students’ responses to using AI as data analysis tools.

Gabriel’s teaching experience includes MENA 160A2: Middle Eastern Humanities (University of Arizona) and GSAH 391: Special Topics in Global Studies (Michigan State University). He has also held FLAS awards (AY 2023-2024; Summer 2024 declined), a critical language scholarship (2024), and was the alternate for the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program (2023). At the University of Arizona, Gabriel is active in student groups, including the MENAS graduate student organization, serves on the board of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), and works closely with students and faculty from the School of Government and Public Policy (SGPP).

Currently, Gabriel is the Graduate Research Associate for the College of Social and Behavioral Science’s Research Institute (SBSRI), where he provides support for his graduate peers in the College by connecting them to funding opportunities, reviewing drafts of their applications, and aspiring to enhance the variety of research taking place within the college. To this role, Gabriel brings his experience as an editor for James Madison College at Michigan State University, where he was the senior project editor for a Templeton Foundation grant project on multi-faith collaborations and Islamic Architecture, editing works from faculty at American, Indonesian, Spanish, and Middle Eastern and North African universities. He has also worked as a writing tutor for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Gabriel received his M.A. in Middle Eastern and North African Studies from the University of Arizona in 2025 and received his B.A. in Comparative Cultures and Politics (additional major in Public and Professional Writing; minor in Arabic; minor in Muslim Studies) from Michigan State University in 2023. He is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
